User experience
User experience beyond the standard smooth gradients
5 min read

Stop blurring the lines. Use hard shadows and sharp edges to guide users with absolute surgical precision.
Soft UI asks the eye to interpret. Hard UI tells it. On a small screen in bad light, interpretation is a tax your user pays on every tap.
Edges are information
A border is a promise: this thing ends here. Blur removes the promise and replaces it with a suggestion. For grouping, selection, and anything a finger has to hit, the promise wins.
Shadows that mean something
A hard offset shadow encodes direction and distance with no ambiguity. Use one offset across the whole product and vary only the distance — 3px for resting elements, more for things that float above.
Contrast is accessibility, not taste
Most soft palettes fail contrast at body size. Hard palettes rarely do, which quietly fixes a class of problems nobody filed a ticket about.
What to keep soft
Motion. Sharp edges with eased, unhurried transitions is the combination that reads as confident rather than aggressive.
